Kevin Buck Stories

Kevin Buck stories have become legend amongst family and friends. To help you understand what I mean, let me take you back to the beginning of how these started.

I was a senior in high school and was invited to make a late application to the University of San Francisco, where I ended up attending, in April of 1976. I did not have a car and asked my friend, Jim Benson (JB), who had a car, if he was interested in a road trip. He agreed. And so, it began.

We left early from Cypress and stopped in Santa Barbara for breakfast. I had never been to Santa Barbara, and when the waitress walked up, she looked at me and asked, “Aren’t you Kevin Buck?” I admitted to it and she then shared where she knew me from. JB was just shaking his head in disbelief.

Once we arrived in San Francisco, we decided to do a bit of sight- seeing, since neither of us had been to SF. We did all the regular spots, including Union Square. As we were standing there, figuring out what to do next, a young woman walks up to me and asks, “Aren’t you Kevin Buck?” JB looks at me, shakes his head and asks if I know people wherever I go. The legend has begun, and the stories continued.

As a last example, In the 90’s I was on a road trip with a friend, John Mc Andrew, and we were in New Mexico. He suggested that we stop at Ojo Caliente Natural Springs Resort for the day. It was midweek and the place was deserted. When we got out to the pools, we were all alone, except for a woman in the large pool. Once we made our way to the large pool to cool down, the woman turned around and said – Kevin Buck! It was a friend and colleague from Pepperdine, where we were both adjunct professors, Michelle McCormick. John was familiar with Kevin Buck stories and just laughed. “Of course, you know the only other person here!”, he said.

At this point, my family and friends know there are a multitude of these, and now just hear them as normal for me. On a certain level, it has kept me vigilant, because I never know who I am going to meet again somewhere.

So, what are your ___ ___ stories?
